In a few words
After my PhD in Cell Biology with B. Hoflack at EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Heidelberg, Germany), during which I was interested in membrane trafficking, I joined the lab of F. Schweisguth at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (Paris) to combine cell biology and developmental biology approaches. I have been studying asymmetric cell division and Notch dependent binary cell fate acquisition using Drosophila as a model organism. There, I first show that cell-cell contact provide a positional cue to orient asymmetric cell division. Second, I showed that the E3 ubiquitin ligase Neuralized segregates unequally during asymmetric cell division, to control the endocytic trafficking of the Notch ligand, a process essential for binary activation of Notch. I also showed that a second E3 ubiquitin ligase called Mind Bomb has a complementary function to Neuralized during Drosophila development, leading to the concept that Notch activation always requires the endocytosis of its ligands. Since my arrival at the IGDR, my lab is interested in the molecular mechanisms of epithelial cell division, linking the transmission of epithelial barrier functions to the spatio-temporal activation of the Notch pathway during cytokinesis.
